Living in Singapore, I have had different experiences living in different kinds of homes. As a little child, I grew up in a massive HDB flat similar to what many other Singaporean children grew in. This was a great fun environment for a child to grow in. It was a great playground for children since there were many children to play with. The flat we were living in was particularly well suited for children since it had a nice playground for the kids. The playground had a few slides, swings, monkey bars, and an open filed where kids could enjoy play.
While in college, I had to be away from home. My college was a long distance away from home. During the first one and a half years, I boarded within the college compound in one of the college provided hostels. I did not like the hostel conditions and after one and a half years I decided to rent my own residence out of campus. There were several house owners within the area close to the University who were providing short term rentals for extra rooms within their houses.
Living in the short term rentals from without the campus provided several advantages including the chance to have some privacy, the opportunity to have more flexibility in movement, and it was also an opportunity for the young students to experience independent life living on their own..
I managed to come across a common room available for rent which was strategically located and quite ideal for me. This is the room where I lived in for the rest of my college days.
After college, I got a job while still living with my parents. I did not live with them for a long time before I got married and moved off to live with my husband who was living in a rented apartment owned by a private developer.
When I was expecting my first child, my husband and I decided that it would be good if we moved to another house. We needed a house that would be able to comfortably accommodate us and the child. The one bedroom apartment we were living in would not be ideal for us and the child due to several reasons.
The foremost reason why we needed to move to a new house was the fact that the one bedroom apartment did not have enough room for the newborn. Our old bedroom could not comfortably accommodate a cot for the baby.
The house was also not very safe for an expectant mother or a mother with a young child. There were steep stairs leading to the apartment and there were no lifts in the building. The stairs would be too strenuous for me as my pregnancy progressed and it would also be quite tedious and dangerous going up the stairs while carrying a child.
After some searching, we were able to find a suitable apartment for me and my child. This is the apartment we still live in. It is a two bedroomed modern HDB apartment that has modern facilities and is built to safely and comfortably accommodate young kiddies.
