A garbage disposal is one of the most useful inventions for homes. It makes cleaning up easier and also helps in reducing pollutants that slowly destroy our environment. That is why it is also important to maintain and use it properly.
Use It Regularly
Even if you do not have anything to grind, you should still let your disposal run every few days. If you don’t let it operate for a long time, it would rust and some items can get easily stuck.
Keep the Water Running
The water would help flush down the ground bits and pieces of waste you have shoved down the disposal. Letting the water run continuously would prevent some scraps from clogging and getting trapped on the drain.
Chop Small Pieces
Your disposal, no matter how high its horsepower is, can only do so much. Make sure that the big chunks of fruit and meat, for instance, would be small enough for them to be ground properly. Also, do not put a lot of scraps at once.
Use Cold Water
Cold water is recommended to flush the wastes and rinse the garbage disposal. This would keep the food from melting and clinging to the sides. It would also prevent your disposal from overheating.
Clean It Regularly
It is just more hygienic to clean after yourself. It’s the same with garbage disposals. You would need to make sure that there are no scraps clinging on the sides and that there would be no stench coming from your kitchen sink. You can clean your disposal by running the machine on citrus rinds, dish soap and vinegar.
Throw In Your Garbage In It
Your garbage disposal is not a garbage can where you can throw in just about anything. This machine is only specifically designed to grind food scraps alone. Do not attempt to put in your table napkins and plastics in it as it would clog or even damage your machine.
Reach Inside The Disposal
If something accidentally falls in the garbage disposal that shouldn’t be there, do not attempt to reach inside and take it off with your bare hands even if it is turned off. It is still safer to pry out the object using a coat hanger or some tools that are long enough to reach it.
Put In Hard Items
If they’re not food wastes, then do not put them in the disposal, especially if they are made of tough materials like metal, wood and the like. Also, you wouldn’t want to put in fibrous materials as the fibers would wind themselves on the blades.
Use Coffee Grounds To Clean It
There is no denying that coffee would eliminate the unwanted smell of rotten food, and the grounds would help clean surfaces well. However, you can’t use it in the garbage disposal. It is harder to flush coffee grounds and would clog the drain. You can learn more about different garbage disposals like the Waste King L-8000 legend series here.
